Living Room Remodel

This job was really awesome for me in a lot of different ways. Not only did I like the project & the way the finished product looked, but my client's may have been the nicest, coolest people I've ever met in my life. I was so spoiled being at their house & how gracious and wonderful they were!

Initially there was flagstone in the front entry and fireplace in the living room. Their vision was to get rid of the 60's vibe and bring in a more modern look with a warmer feel. Coming in to this type of situation where the flagstone isn't easy to remove, we had to go over it.

I proceeded to float right over the rock so that I was able to lay the tiles on a level, smooth surface.

They chose very large ceramic tiles and weren't wanting a trim, therefore I had to miter all of the corners. Mitering is where you cut the corners at a 45 degree angle which gives it a very clean, precise edge and a modern, tight feel with extremely small grout joints.

I love the way it turned out!

Just checking to make sure it's level….

The carpenter is coming back to put a wood cap on the top to match the fireplace mantle. It all looked fantastic and my clients were thrilled. It's amazing how much adding updated tile can change the entire look and feel of your home.

  1. I'm so glad to have found you on google images! I haven't been able to find any examples, until now, of a successful tile over rock project. We are in the process of re-doing our rock faced fireplace. The rocks are large and protruding, so my husband spent some good ours last weekend chipping away at the paint covered GRANITE rock that the previous owner defaced. Can you tell me what you floated over the rock with and how in our situation we could make it level when all the rock is varied in size? I can email you a picture, if that helps. I would so appreciate the advice!!
